Equipment & Software

Webserver
cPanelDigital Red owns a dedicated webserver which is housed at GlobalSwitch 1 by UK Dedicated Limited. It runs CentOS, the Enterprise-class Linux distribution with cPanel, the best and easiest to use web-based control panel available - meaning that you can run your hosting account online yourself using the intuitive point-and-click options to set up email accounts, monitor bandwidth, set up spam filtering etc.

Desktop Workstation
Xara Xtreme Box and CDFor my two main PCs, I run Microsoft Windows XP Professional on one, and Windows Vista Business on the other. Both use Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium for coding and Xara Xtreme Pro for all graphics work. The PCs have 2GB of RAM and dual core AMD Athlon 64 processors. Although I am right handed, I prefer to use the mouse in my left hand!

Thunderbird iconEmail
I prefer and recommend that people use IMAP for their email because it means that they can access the same email on more than one PC and via the web wherever they are.
The new Roundcube webmail system runs on the server to give web access to your email, and both Mozilla Thunderbird and Microsoft Office Outlook (both 2003 and 2007) have good IMAP features.

Desktop Utilities
Many of the utilites that I use are free, and often open-source, but there are also some paid-for programs that I couldn't live without. Many of the free programs are listed on the Downloads page, but I also heartily recommend Copernic Desktop Search and Acronis TrueImage.

Good quality tea, made properly
Yorkshire TeaThis is a support and development specialist and there is a section on tea? You'd better believe it! Good tea is the key to success in this office! If I'm paying a visit to your sick computer, you had better start swotting up on how to make good tea! Very strong, just a teaspoon of milk, and no sugar. Good quality assam tea made from leaves is ideal, but Yorkshire Tea from teabags will do...
